Course Description:

This graduate‑level course provides a comprehensive exploration of prophetic ministry, ecclesial leadership, and spiritual discernment through the primary text The Official Handbook for the School of the Prophets by Archbishop Dr. Melvin J. Rivers. Designed for M.Div., D.Min., and advanced leadership cohorts, the course integrates biblical theology, historical analysis, and contemporary ministry application to equip students for responsible, theologically grounded prophetic engagement within the global Church.

Drawing from Archbishop Rivers’ extensive experience as a seminary president, academic leader, and ecclesial architect, the course emphasizes a scholar‑practitioner model that aligns with institutional learning outcomes related to theological reflection, ministerial competency, and spiritual formation. Students will examine the biblical foundations of prophetic ministry, evaluate historical and modern expressions of prophetic leadership, and develop frameworks for ethical, contextually intelligent ministry practice.

The course is structured to support measurable academic outcomes, including critical thinking, exegetical skill, leadership development, and the integration of theology with real‑world ministry contexts. Through readings, discussions, case studies, and applied assignments, students will cultivate the discernment, integrity, and theological depth necessary for effective leadership in contemporary ecclesial environments.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a theologically sound understanding of prophetic ministry rooted in Scripture and supported by credible academic sources.
  • Analyze historical, cultural, and ecclesial contexts that shape prophetic leadership.
  • Apply principles from Archbishop Rivers’ text to contemporary ministry challenges with ethical and spiritual maturity.
  • Integrate biblical theology, leadership theory, and practical ministry skills in a scholar‑practitioner framework.
